Miriam, 30
I have a bright and spirited 9 year old daughter who fills my life with joy and hope. She’s incredibly intelligent and has a unique way of seeing the world. However, it breaks my heart to witness the worry she carries about my status. As a DACA recipient who has lived in this country for most of my life, I often reflect on my own childhood fears. I remember feeling scared for my mother when I was her age, fearful that something could happen to her, separating us forever.
Seeing my daughter experience similar anxieties is truly crushing. The thought that immigration authorities could come at any moment and take me away, leaving her alone, is a nightmare I can’t shake. It’s a heavy burden for a child to bear, and it pains me to know that she has to think about such things at such a young age.
This is why I am incredibly grateful for the work that Father Gary is doing. He courageously walks alongside us and stands up not only for me but for all undocumented families facing these challenges. He sheds light on our struggles, advocating for our rights and dignity. We are not criminals or bad people, we are simply families striving to make a better life for ourselves and our loved ones. We work hard every day, contributing to our communities and society as a whole, yet we often live in fear of being torn apart.
Father Gary’s efforts remind me that we are not alone in this fight. His support gives us hope and strength, encouraging us to continue advocating for our families and seeking the justice we deserve. Together, we strive for a future where our children can grow up without fear and worry, allowing them to focus on their dreams and aspirations.
